Objective of this service

The learner will be able to demonstrate knowledge of working place fires, their probable causes, how to prevent them, how they are detected and how to apply emergency fire fighting procedures.

Course Outcomes

1. Demonstrate basic knowledge pertaining to fires

Provides a clear understanding and practical knowledge of the fire tetrahedron and the role of each element in the propagation of a fire, the gases produced by working place fires are named and spontaneous combustion is explained. The reasons for changes in air temperature and gas concentration during fires are explained and measured. An effective escape strategy is explained. The required symbolic signs and safety equipment, pertaining to fires, are explained.

2. Demonstrate knowledge of the causes and prevention of working place fires

Provides a clear understanding and practical knowledge of the common causes of working place fires, the precautions that need to be taken to prevent working place fires and the classification of fire risks in a working area.

3. Demonstrate knowledge of fire detection methods The learner will have

The learner will have a clear understanding of the functions of fire detection methods/systems, types of instruments used for fire detection and the role of physical senses in the detection of working place fires in accordance with specified requirements.

4. Demonstrate knowledge pertaining to fire preparedness

Provide a clear understanding and practical knowledge on the importance of firefighting, escape and rescue procedures. The importance of an up to date fire and rescue plan, indicating all relevant information. Different types of fire extinguishing equipment to be used for different types of fires is explained and demonstrated. The importance of regular inspection and maintenance of fire fighting equipment is explained and the necessity for an emergency control room is explained.

Assessment of competency

Theoretical assessment (1.0 hour) and Practical Assessment (1.0 hour)

Minimum Requirements to register

The delegate that attends this course must:

– Read and Write in English;

– Communication at NQF Level 2;

– Mathematical literacy at NQF Level 2;

– Will have attained competence in the unit standard:

“Conduct an investigation into workplace incidents” (SAQA ID 120335).
