Safety Engineering and Risk Management

Management and operational personnel are required to identify, understand and implement legal requirements. How do you translate legal requirements into operational requirements and how do you integrate your HSE risks into your management system policies and procedures? We believe that risk management should be about practical steps to protect people from real harm and suffering – not bureaucratic back covering. If you believe some of the stories you hear, health and safety is all about stopping any activity that might possibly lead to harm. This is not our vision of sensible health and safety – we want to save lives, not stop them. Our approach is to seek a balance between the unachievable aim of absolute safety and the kind of poor management of risk that damages lives and the economy. Risk management involves you, the employer, looking at the risks that arise in the workplace and then putting sensible health and safety measures in place to control them. By doing this you can protect you’re most valuable asset, your employees, as well as members of the public from harm.

Course Objective

Delegates will get working knowledge on the implementation of a HSE Risk Management Program:

  • Demonstrate an understanding and proper application of the appropriate science and engineering principles and quality applicable aspects of risk, human reliability, fault logic, failure modes, incident cost and incident prediction.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the following system-safety analysis techniques and methods:
  • Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP)
  • Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)
  • Risk Assessment and Analysis
  • Energy Hazard Barrier Target  Analysis
  • Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
  • Other techniques to discussed include; Technique for Human Error Rate Prediction (THERP)
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the planning and management principles of a system safety program.
  • Demonstrate an ability to determine what elements of a system safety program are critical to assessing the effectiveness of an overall program.
  • Discuss attitude required to improve safety conditions in the workplace, and the need for formal written procedures.
  • Discuss the analysis of potentially dangerous conditions for risk management.
  • Discuss hazardous chemicals and their safe management.
  • Discuss work in confined spaces, excavations and elevated areas.
  • Discuss the safety aspects of gases and pressure vessels.
  • Discuss emergency preparedeness and respose procedures.
  • Discuss how the Safety Auditing system can gauge the Company’s Safety status.
  • Discuss Technical Reports and Accident Investigations to reduce future risks.
  • Understand the overall Management of Risk Process
  • Apply a variety of techniques to determine and quantify potential risks & Risk Assessment.
  • Understand and apply the Layer of Protection Analysis LOPA

Topic-Related Risk Assessment

The Modules are aimed at helping managers, supervisors and safety practitioners deal with the risks associated with key health and safety topics. They follow a risk assessment approach, which looks to integrate specific issues into an organization’s health and safety management system.

Risk Assessment

Under health and safety legislation the main requirement for employers is to conduct suitable and sufficient risk assessments. Indeed, risk assessments form the lynchpin of health and safety management.

Focus on which employees are most “at Risk”By identifying the employees most likely to be involved in a fatal or serious incident, safety professionals can target their efforts to the employees who need appropriate training or education.

New Employees.
“People new to the job have a fairly high risk profile. Developing a comprehensive new employee orientation process and focusing training on life-threatening risks could have a positive impact on fatality prevention.Contractors. Contractors also are at a higher risk to be involved in a serious or fatal incident. While many contractors may have excellent safety records, .Anytime contractors are on a plant site, it increases the risk.

Outsourced/Temporary Employees. Outsourcing employees or using temporary manpower means employing people who are not familiar with either the processes or the risks inherent in the job.

Workers Logging Overtime. Employees who work more hours trade off the benefit of added production with fatigue and an increased likelihood of incidents.

Risk Takers.
Industries with a history of tolerating risk-taking cultures. attract risk-taking employees. Even worse, the presence of both “internal and external rewards for risk-taking” can affect safety processes. Employees actually may be most vulnerable when they feel invincible.

Course Certificate

An iSTEC Safety certificate will be issued to all attendees completing minimum of 75% of the total tuition hours of the course
